Frequently Asked Questions

Below are a few of the questions we get asked the most. If you have any other questions, don’t hesitate to contact us for more information.

1. What is the process for starting a new home with Chelsea Jones Studio?

Reference our Design Process section of the website to get better acquainted with our design process and how the process begins. If you are looking for a more tailored answer for your project specifically, reach out to us via email or our Contact page.

2. How do you determine your fees and what is included in your services?

We wish we could give you a point blank fee right on our website for you to reference, but all of our fees are tailored based on the following factors:

  1. Each project has different conditions and expectations that are all unique to that project specifically. Not two projects are alike.
  2. Our fee is also dependent on how much time and work you need from us. Do you need to work with us to figure out a floor plan or are you looking to work with us all the way through when your project has completed construction?
  3. For a custom fee breakdown for your specific project, we setup a meeting, preferably at the project site, and discuss the constraints, ideas, and wants & needs that you are looking for and then provide a detailed proposal of our design fee for you to review.

3. Can you help with obtaining necessary permits and approvals?

Yes we can! We have worked with many of the local jurisdictions in and around Austin for permitting various types of projects.

4. How do you handle project timelines and what happens if there are delays?

We avoid project delays as much as possible by implementing the following items into our design process:

  1. Sending weekly emails to our clients regarding the project status and what communication / decisions are needed by the client and when they are needed by.
  2. We work with manufacturers and reps for products and materials during the design process to determine any long lead items up front and adjust the design based on these lead items.
  3. If a project delay does arise, Chelsea Jones Studio does everything in their power to propel the project forward at an expeditious pace whether that means completing the drawings quicker, permit expediting or bringing contractors on board during design so that we can work together to determine any preliminary construction issues before construction begins. Some of these delay solutions may be at an additional cost to the owner and is scenario dependent.

5. Do you require a retainer to start a project?

No, we do not require a retainer to begin a project with us. We do however require a signed contract before proceeding forward with design.

6. What level of involvement will I have throughout the design and construction process?

We want our clients to be as involved as they would like to be throughout the entire design & construction process. We keep our clients in the loop through weekly status emails, regular design meetings and on-site construction meetings.

7. How do you handle changes or modifications to the design after the project has started?

Our design process includes having the client sign-off at the end of each design phase to confirm that the design is progressing as the client has intended. Any changes the client would like to make can be done before this sign-off. If the design does get over 50% completed and the client requests a major design change, Chelsea Jones Studio will inform the client that the requested change will incur an additional fee before the change is made. The client can then decide to either make the change or leave the design as is.

Chelsea Jones Studio lets the client know beforehand that any design changes requested past this 50% completion point will incur an additional fee.

8. How do you ensure communication is maintained between all parties involved in the project?

We include weekly client emails regarding the status of the project and we have a project management website where we track the project that the client has access to.

9. Do you offer interior design services or collaborate with interior designers?

For smaller projects, yes, we are able to offer interior design services. For entire home renovations or new builds, we recommend hiring an interior designer. We have a wonderful list of interior designers we absolutely love for all kinds of projects that we would recommend!

10. How do you handle challenges or unexpected issues that arise during the project?

We handle project challenges by addressing the challenge, informing the client and moving forward with the next proper steps as expeditiously as possible.

11. Can you work with the existing structure or do you prefer new builds?

Yes, we can work with the existing structure for either a renovation or addition and we can do new builds as well. For existing conditions, we do a full on-site assessment with measurements and photographs so we have an accurate model to design off of
